AICGS Society, Culture & Politics Program

The AICGS Society, Culture & Politics Program enhances understanding of the impact of culture on German-American relations. The Program analyzes how cultural beliefs and values, evolving interpretations of historical experiences, and shifting conceptions of national identity shape perspectives and policy responses in the German-American dialogue.

In a very real sense, history and culture are the lenses through which Germans and Americans perceive and make sense of a changed international system, and help to influence the ways that they respond to new threats, to economic globalization, and to the challenges of multiculturalism and social pluralism. Though the influence of history and culture on German and American policy and on German-American relations is often indirect or indeterminate, culture and politics are often linked and indeed are of increasing relevance in today's world. The AICGS Society, Culture & Politics Program aims to make these links more transparent and to enhance understanding of their impact on German-American and transatlantic relations.

Dr. Lily Gardner Feldman is Director of the Society, Culture & Politics Program and Harry and Helen Gray Senior Fellow. Dr. Gardner Feldman has published widely in the U.S. and Europe on German foreign policy, German-Jewish relations, international reconciliation, non-state entities as foreign policy players, and the EU as an international actor.
